Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle (died 1757) once said: "a philosopher sees the earth as a large planet, traveling through the heavens, covered with fools."

I bill myself as a scholar and philosopher.  That means I read books and think about things.  Nothing pretentious there.

And it strikes me that we are working hard these days to prove Bernard right - successfully.
