Dynastic Inclination

9 April 2009

I was reading in the Economist magazine today about the Congress parties' new great hope (India), whose name is, surprise, surprise, Ghandi.  He is the grandson or great grandson of the Mahatma.  It got me to thinking about this trend - everywhere.  In fact I even saw in another book that the two Dulles' uncle was Secretary of State Lansing, Secretary of State during the Wilson administration.

You see it everywhere: politics, professional sports, professional writing, tje music industry, the movies.  Of course, many people also take over the family business, but to me somehow the entertainment business seems different, although I don't know why it should be, except that one would think that the entertainment business (including politics) required a certain talent that was not necessarily passed through genes.

Name recognition is part of it; people see the name and identify with it - and vote for it, apparently.  I've heard of that guy.  They might not even know anything about the person they have heard of, just that they recognize the name.  Such is fame.  And let's face it - the fame, the name - opens doors, along with the  associated connections, ,of course.

But it's not fair!  Get real; dyansties of all kinds are part of  life; get used to it, like it or not.
