Here is a theory - totally unsupported and without facts or data - just a theory that popped into my mind.

Suddenly the European countries seem to have turned (however slightly) against the social democrats in the EU elections.  Lebanon to everyone's surprise, voted pro West.  And the Pakistanis have actually gone in and kicked butt, really kicked butt, in the northwest frontier where the foreign terrorists hang out.  Why?

Here is my theory.  The world is seeing that for the first time in memory that the United States , under a new a waggy-dog friendly president, is not going to fight their battles for them and bale them out; let's just all be friends.  Omigod!  Is it possible, just a teeny bit possible, that this is just a little frightening to them, and they are beginning to think they might have to take care of themselves?
